The countdown started for the divorce between UPA and Left. UPA government is in danger, talking to Mulayam and others to get support to sustain the government. All the activities going on around the Indo US nuclear deal. What happens if government falls right now? Probably nothing as the elections are due very soon and Dr Manmohan Singh will certainly get sympathy from public if left, who is always want to be "left" alone while doing any "right" thing for the country, withdraws support from the government on the Nuclear deal issue.
I used to be a BJP supporter and still have a little soft corner for them but I love Dr Manmohan Singh too. What a person like me would think at this point of time? Almost impossible but nobody can stop me from wishing- "If BJP and UPA unite on this issue!"
As I said, elections are due soon, be it today or six months from now-they are going to happen. BJP, which is struggling to find a solid issue and trying to revive the old Mandir and cash on new "Amarnath" issue, needs to show some maturity to the public and and can at least pretend to show that they care for the country. If I was Mr. Advani, I would have gone ahead and announced that BJP would support UPA and save the government in case Communists withdraw support from government and cause it to fall. Everybody talks about "Issue based politics" so now it is time to show that "actions speak louder than words". BJP, with his past of being aggressive on India's nuclear policy and having tested the nuclear bomb despite all that resistance, needs to prove that 'issues" are above party lines and they can do anything for country even if it means supporting to the ruling party while sitting in the opposition.
This has some other benefits too. First of all, left will be sidelined as their withdrawal of support will have no significance at all. Public knows them very well but if a party like BJP supports government on such an issue, public will clearly understand that their are three kind of parties in India-Ruling parties (NPA), Opposition parties (NDA, SP etc.) and left who can neither find it's place in ruling not in opposition party. It will also create some positive feeling in public towards the politicians. Everybody is just looking at our politicians to show some maturity and do something which helps building the nation. This will also save people's tax money which has to be spent every now and then in elections due to withdrawal of support from any Tom, Dick or Harry.
I live in US and I have seen it works for US. I have seen democrats and republicans working across party lines and help passing laws. I don't mean that the politics in US is clean and all the politicians are nice, what I mean is that there are instances where opposite thinking minds have worked together on issues of common interest. The same thing they are expecting from India and it certainly puts India in a very bad situation if the government hesitates to sign the deal just because bunch of negative thinking politicians are blackmailing the government and threatening them every now and then.
BJP has shown maturity in the past in parliament, in external affairs, improving relations with neighbors and reaching their friendly hand to opposition when needed. They need to show it once again that they are the same BJP who can do anything which is of national interest and really don't care about politics in such cases.
If I remember correctly, recently Mr. Advani was touched by Rahul Gandhi’s gesture of walking up to him at the Delhi airport's VIP lounge, and that the BJP leader had told him that the two mainstream parties should treat each other as "political adversaries and not enemies". Mr. Advani, time has come to convert those words to "action". So please move forward and do what is best in the nation's interest.
Mera Bharat Mahaan!
